Problem / Brief

Theme: Resonance. Two people, two rhythms, two separate lives moving at their own frequency. When life pulls us in different directions, connection becomes harder to find and easier to lose. The question became how to design a car that creates the conditions for human connection rather than just enabling transport.

Research

Early explorations tested whether socialising happened with the exterior or the interior of the vehicle, and whether the car itself could become the architecture of a shared moment. MG Node is built on a simple physical truth: when two wave sources align, they don't just add, they amplify. The same principle applies to people.

Iterations

The answer was in the rear. By treating the back of each vehicle as an active social surface: deployable tables, attachment points for shelter, a surface to sit on. Two independent cars become one shared space. 1 + 1 = 2 became 1 + 1 > 2. A lightweight tensioned fabric deploys from pole attachment points integrated into the rear exterior of each car, meeting in the middle to form a sheltered social zone. Rigid poles click into dedicated pin-point attachments on the rear body, no tools, no setup time. Folding surfaces deploy from the rear flanks of each vehicle, providing a shared workspace or dining surface between the two cars. Each occupant still owns their personal space inside the cabin, facing forward, in control of their own journey.

Outcome

The MG Node sits in a new segment: A-segment footprint, SUV-tall greenhouse. At 3500mm long and 1800mm tall, it's compact enough for the city and open enough to feel like more. The large panoramic glazing, structural T-bar, and oversized wheel arches give it presence without bulk. Every surface detail serves a dual purpose: the pin-point attachments on the rear are both a design feature and a functional anchor for the gathering system. The design language draws from the concept of interference, surfaces that meet, overlap, and create something new at the point of contact.

Reflection

Drive it for the road. Deploy it for the moment. The car does the rest.
